R U OK Day: The Question We Forget to Ask Ourselves

Every September, the message shows up everywhere. On billboards, in office kitchens, across every social feed you scroll through. Check in on someone. Ask if they're okay. Really listen.

It's an amazing message. An important one. R U OK Day has genuinely changed how Australians talk about mental health, and there's a reason it's stuck around since 2009. We often get so focused on checking in on everyone else that almost nobody stops to ask the same question of themselves.

So this year, I want to ask you directly.

Are you okay?

Not the reflexive "yeah, good thanks" you give a stranger at the shops. The actual answer. The one you'd give if someone sat with you for ten minutes and genuinely wanted to know.

Why We're So Bad at Asking Ourselves

Here's something I see constantly in my practice. People come in expecting to talk about a specific issue, a fear of flying, trouble sleeping, a habit they can't shake, and within the first session it becomes clear that underneath all of it is something quieter. A low hum of anxiety that's been running in the background for months, sometimes years, that they've simply learned to live alongside.

They didn't come in for that. They came in for the thing on the surface. And that's completely normal, because anxiety rarely announces itself. It doesn't usually look like falling apart. It looks like being fine.

It looks like staying busy enough that there's no time to sit with anything uncomfortable. It looks like being the reliable one, the person everyone else leans on, the one who's always got it together. It looks like scrolling a bit too long before bed because switching your brain off has started to feel impossible. It looks like snapping at something small because you've been holding a lot that had nowhere to go.

None of that reads as crisis. It reads as a normal, functioning adult having a normal, busy life. Which is exactly why it's so easy to miss, especially in yourself. You don't need a full stop to notice something's off. You just need to actually check.

You Don't Need a Reason to Check In With Yourself

I think one of the biggest blocks people have around their own mental health is the belief that they need to earn the right to pay attention to it. That things need to have gotten bad enough, dramatic enough, visible enough, before it counts as a real problem worth addressing.

That's not true, and it's not how I work with people. You don't need a diagnosis, a breakdown, or a rock-bottom moment to decide that how you're feeling matters. If something has been showing up for you lately, a tightness, a restlessness, a sense of being switched on all the time with no real off button, that's reason enough to pay attention to it. Waiting until it's undeniable just means you spend longer carrying it than you needed to.

This is really what R U OK Day is about at its core, even if the messaging usually points outward. It's a reminder that support doesn't have a threshold. You're allowed to reach for it early. You're allowed to reach for it before things get loud.

What Actually Helps

I'm a big believer that noticing something is only the first half. The other half is knowing what to actually do with it, and that's where a lot of people get stuck. Talking about anxiety in the abstract is one thing. Working through what's actually driving it, the patterns, the protective habits your mind has built up over time, the stories you've been carrying without realising it, is a different process entirely.

This is where hypnotherapy tends to surprise people. It's not about being "put under" or losing control, and it's not some theatrical trick. It's a way of working with the subconscious mind directly, the part of you that's usually running the show long before your conscious thoughts catch up. A lot of the anxious patterns people carry were never decided on purpose. They were formed as protection, once upon a time, and they've simply stuck around long after they stopped being useful. Hypnotherapy gives you a way to actually reach that layer and start shifting it, rather than just talking around it session after session.

It's not a quick fix, and I'd never pretend it was. But it's a genuinely different way in, especially for people who've tried talking things through before and found themselves still stuck in the same loop.

A Small Step, If You're Ready

If reading this has stirred something, a recognition, a "yeah, actually, that's been me lately," I want to make it a little easier to do something about it.

This R U OK Day, I'm offering a 4-session package for $840, available until the 10th September. Four sessions gives us enough room to actually get somewhere real, rather than scratching the surface once and calling it done. It's for anyone who's ready to properly work through what's been sitting underneath the busyness, not just talk about it once and go back to normal.

You don't need to have it all figured out before reaching out. You just need to be honest with yourself about the answer to one simple question.

So, R U OK?

If the honest answer is "not really, if I'm being straight with you," I'd love to have a conversation. No pressure, no assumptions, just a proper chat about what's been going on and whether this is the right fit for you.

If you or someone you know is struggling, Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14.
